Northern Water Snake
Nerodia sipedon
Northern Water
Snakes are dark snakes with keeled scales that typically measure from 2-4 feet long as adults. They are found throughout the
state, with the exception of parts of the Adirondacks and the northernmost portion of the state. They are expert swimmers,
and devour mostly fish, frogs, and tadpoles.
Northern Water
Snakes are often confused with venomous Cottonmouths found in the Southern United States. Cottonmouths are NOT
found in New York State. Our Native water snake is harmless, despite their notorious temper when handled.
