Spotted Salamander
Ambystoma maculatum
Spotted Salamanders are large and black with
yellow spots. They live in moist soil burrows throughout the state, feeding on insects, spiders, and snails.
Spotted salamanders live underground, and rely
on small mammal burrows to get around. In the spring, the males compete for female in ponds, and eggs are laid in a large
thick jelly-mass at the bottom.
