Red Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Red-shouldered hawks are larger than Broad-winged but smaller than Red-tailed hawks. As adults they have red shoulders, a rusty barred chest, and a banded tail. Juveniles have a streaked chest and translucent patches on their wings.

These hawks prefer swampy areas and are scattered across New York State. They are listed as a "Special concern" species in New York, although surveys indicate their numbers appear to be increasing.

Red shouldered hawks eat snakes, frogs, small mammals, and occasionally birds.
