Raccoon
Procyon lotor

Raccoons are one of the most frequently encountered Mammals in New York. There ringed tail and face mask make it hard to mistake them for anything else.  They are highly intelligent and adaptable and able to live in a wide variety of habitats, but thrive in the fragmented forest environments created near people.

Raccoons eat almost anything, nuts, acorns, fungi, insects, eggs, small mammals, and carrion are all on the menu. They are most active at night, and have a knack for getting into Garbage pails.
