Virginia Opossum
Didelphis virginiana
Opossums are
the only Marsupials currently found in North America. They are slow moving, primarily nocturnal, and are known for playing
dead when confronted by predators. Opossums are opportunistic eaters, feeding
on everything from carrion and insects to nuts and berries.
Opossums are
common throughout much of the state, but, being prone to frostbite on their ears and tails, they are absent from much of the
Adirondacks and Northern New York.
