Laughing Gull
Larus atricilla
Laughing gulls
are medium sized birds with dark hoods. They will devour anything they can find, from insects to garbage. While they are considered
a “summer” species, it’s not unheard of to find a few in New York in the winter.
These gulls
are at home in parking lots or sandy beaches along the coast, and rarely venture far inland. Breeding
populations in New York State have fluctuated over the years, with the birds being absent for almost 80 years after feathered
hats and egg collecting took their toll around the turn of the century.
