Eastern Newt

Notophthalmus viridescens

Eastern, or "Red-Spotted" Newts are aquatic as adults and may be familiar as they wetre formerly sold in pet stores across the state. Adults are olive colored with black-edged red spots, yellow bellies, and flattened tails. As juviniles they are terestrial, bright orange (bearing the same spots as adults), and referred to as red efts. They are found across New York State. They are vulnerable to habitat fragmentation and fish introductions.

Juvinile efts have powerful toxic skin secretions and can be found wandering around the forest floor or under logs. Efts remain on land for 2-5 years before metamorphisizing a second time into aquatic adults. Adults feed on mollusks, aquatic arthropods, and eggs.
