Monk Parakeet
Myiopsitta monachus
Monk Parakeets (aka Quaker
Parrots) are native to South America, more specifically Argentina. Their appearance in Brooklyn was first noted in the early
70's, and is often attributed to an accidental release in the late 60's. Their presence in New York has been a controversial
topic over the years. Their tendency to build huge stick nests in power towers and the fear that they will crowd out local
species, has been pit against the affection and pride they find within the neighborhoods within which they reside, and oddly
enough, the reported fact that their feces does not aid in the chemical erosion of buildings (unsubstantiated), as does
that of pigeons. The Carolina Parakeet, the only Native Parrot species in the eastern US (and NY) was wiped out a century
ago.
