European Starling
Sturnus vulgaris
Starlings were introduced
to NY (and the US), as a result of multiple releases in New York City in the 1800’s. Starlings occur statewide, with
the exception of high elevation areas in the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Tug Hill. Although they are aggressive competitors
for nesting cavities, studies have been unable to confirm a direct negative impact on most native bird species. This observation
could be due to the fact that Starlings thrive in Human altered habitat, (which is plentiful), and were introduced into such
over 150 years ago. It’s likely that factors such as forest fragmentation and habitat loss have more of an impact on
Native species than the Starling itself.
