Coyote

Canis latrans

Coyotes are the largest Canine in New York, and have become rather infamous as of late due to a few isolated attacks on humans.  The notorious reputation is rather unfair, as most coyotes tend to be very wary of people and spook easily.

Coyotes are omnivorous and very adaptable, able to hunt alone, cooperate in groups, or scavenge for food. Everything from garden vegetables to White-tailed Deer is on the menu. Since the disappearance of the Gray Wolf and Mountain Lion from New York in the late 1800’s, the Coyote has taken over the niche of top predator.
