Periodical Cicada

Magicicada septendecim

Periodical cicadas spend 17 years underground as nymphs feeding on the roots of deciduous trees. They emerge en masse as adults, creating loud choruses, breed for 4-5 days, and die. Their dark coloration and red eyes distinguish them from the annual and 3-year cicadas.
