Mute Swan
Cygnus olor

Introduced from Europe in the late 1800’s, the Mute Swan is currently found in Southern NY/Long Island, and increasingly around the Great Lakes and Central NY.   In some states, this swan is considered an invasive species, and subject to eradication programs. North America’s “native” swans, the Trumpeter and Tundra Swans, have never been very abundant in NY.  But the Mute Swan, being  a large bird, (20 lbs, 7 ft wingspan) consumes quite a bit of aquatic vegetation, and could have a significant impact on the ecosystem. Studies are currently being conducted in NY to access this impact.
