Northern Diamondback Terrapin
Malaclemys terrapin

Diamondback Terrapins inhabit the brackish waters around Long Island, NYC, and the Hudson River. They can be identified by thier dark flecked, gray-white skin, and the concentric grooves on each scute of thier shell.

These turtles were heavily harvested in the early 1900's, which almost lead to thier extinction. They eat a wide variety of marine invertebrates, such as crabs and mollusks.
